As the Mayor of Portmore, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Municipality of Portmore.
Modern Portmore has had spectacular growth over the past 40 years. It has been transformed from swamps, mangroves and farmlands, with scattered hamlets and dirt tracks; to a modern metropolis. The Municipality of Portmore is a burgeoning metropolis and one of Jamaica’s most progressive urban centres. We are the fastest growing community in the English speaking Caribbean and our Municipality’s people are warm, friendly and always on the move.
With a population of some 400,000, we boast the largest pool of trained workers and the highest number of tertiary graduates in Jamaica. We know how to balance work and play effectively and so the Municipality of Portmore is always brimming with the excitement of sports. You can always find a game of football, cricket, netball, volleyball, basketball and dominoes taking place at numerous locations across the Municipality. We also have a number of entertainment facilities, educational institutions and a bustling business community, ready to serve your every need.
Portmore has been famous for its two white sand beaches: the Fort Clarence Beach and the Hellshire, Half Moon Bay Beach. They provide the utmost of tranquillity and relaxation. Want to enjoy sumptuous fried fish, bammy and festival and other delicacies of the sea….here is the place to be, day or night, our friendly fisher folk await you.
The island’s only race track is located at Caymanas Park, in the Municipality, so come visit us and experience the thrill of horse racing.
We are looking forward to many more developments within the Municipality of Portmore which will take us to a first world city, with all the amenities.
I wish to invite you to continue browsing our website to learn more about our magnificent Municipality, from our early days dating back to the period of our first inhabitants to present Portmore.
From my office to you…Welcome to Portmore, we look forward to serving you!
His Worship, Leon Thomas
