Acting Mayor of Portmore, Councillor Leon Thomas, who chaired the meeting, assured that no community within the zone will be bypassed during the two-day exercise.
He appealed to residents to do their part to clean-up their immediate surroundings, and gather larger waste such as fridges, stoves, tyres and so on, so that they can be easily collected by National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) units.
National Clean-up Co-ordinator, Colonel Daniel Pryce, stressed that it is important that the citizens of Portmore be a part of the country’s vector control efforts to reduce the breeding sites of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which transmits ChikV.
He explained that Portmore has been zoned “so that we can concentrate our resources to be able to be more efficient and effective in removing the waste from your area”.
Over one hundred and forty truckloads of waste was removed from the communities. Acting Mayor Councillor Leon Thomas deemed the project a success.
