St. Catherine Municipal Corporation - Labour Day 2018

St. Catherine Municipal Corporation - Labour Day 2018

Scores of volunteers from the community, staff members of the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation and members of the Joint Civic Affairs Committee turned out to ‘ramp it up…fix it up’ at the parish Labour Day project, held at the Old Harbour Bay Fishing Beach Village in St. Catherine on Wednesday, May 23.

Senior Managers of the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation were also out in their numbers, namely: Mayor of Spanish Town and Chairman, Councillor Norman Scott, Chief Executive Officer Mr. Andre Griffiths and Councillor for the Old Harbour South Division, Lloyd Grant, among others supported the event.

Official work commenced close to 9 a.m.

The entire market was washed from top to bottom and painted, a ramp was installed, the fishing beach was thoroughly cleaned of debris, and other aspects of work on the beach premises was addressed.

Both sanitary conveniences were painted and fully refurbished, fixtures and all, and electrical works were done within the market house. A 650 gallon water tank was also installed for water supply.

One vendor said she was very happy to see the transformation of the fishing beach since the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation took it over.   She said it was the best decision to make it the parish project because other areas that are in need of attention can now be addressed.

“It is nice to see this kind of improvement of the beach and market.  It would be good if it could look like this all the time. It is clean and welcoming for everyone who comes to buy fish" said one shopper who identified himself only as ‘brown man’.

Mayor Scott, Mr. Griffiths, Councillor Grant and the Corporations Roads and Works technical team, headed by Chief Technical Officer George Thompson expressed shared view that the project was a success and the level of participation and community spirit was outstanding.
