ST. CATHERINE PARISH DISASTER PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT EMERGENCY READINESS DRILL
Disasters do happen and the word ‘preparedness’ is one that can never be overused.
Now, the St. Catherine Parish Council’s Disaster Planning and Management Committee headed by Parish Coordinator Pat Lewis, is always working to ensure that preparedness measures are in place not only for the parish of St. Catherine but also staff members at the Council on a whole. For this reason, a refresher training programme for Safety Monitors within the Council was held in the meeting room, Emancipation Square, Spanish Town on Tuesday March 02 and Wednesday, March 03, 2016 respectively.
The two-day training was focused on first aid tips, emergency techniques and the crucial role that safety monitors play in evacuating persons in an emergency during daily activities; and information on general fire fighting. Presenters were Orville Lee, Manager of Gentlecare Ambulance, Sergeant Rhone and Corporal Forrester of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, respectively.
One member of staff who is also a safety monitor said “refresher training courses are always good, and persons should be happy to be refreshed in that regard from time to time. These sessions she said are not only useful but are also extremely important and should not be taken lightly. And so as safety monitors with these specific roles and responsibilities, we will always have to be alert and ready to act, in the event a disaster strikes, and this could be anytime without warning”.
The St. Catherine Parish Council Disaster Unit continues to encourage everyone, in the event of any hazard or disaster, “Don’t Be Scared….Be Prepared”.
