The Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) joins Cuba, the US and the rest of the world in celebrating the release of the last of the Cuban five, and the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the US.
It is no secret that Jamaica and Cuba enjoy strong diplomatic and social ties. We have consistently supported the campaign and have successfully moved several resolutions in Council calling for an end to the trade embargo against Cuba.
We applaud the efforts of both nations in taking steps to normalize their relations. While this action does not constitute a complete lift on the embargo against Cuba it certainly represents a new approach to the relationship between Cuba and the US, which is long overdue. Despite the profound differences relating to human rights and foreign policy, this development is a step in the right direction and no doubt will have a ripple effect: paving the way for other countries to follow.
